Developing Economics or maintaining social fairness

     The question of whether to develop a country’s economics or to maintain social fairness has long been a contentious problem for Taiwan. The controversy was established on whether it is morally acceptable to benefit the majority people and disadvantage the minors? Moreover, ordinary citizens hold solid believe that developing economics somehow equals to public welfare deprivation.
     There had been many arguments proclaimed, believing that the government should do everything to protect the equality among the people. However, the question arises on the definition of social fairness. It is obvious that no one wants to be the victim and be deprived while the others benefit from the result. Although the reality shows that both developing economics and social fairness could not be completely balanced. For example, when the Taiwanese government attempts to sign the EFCFA with the Chinese government many people protested on the street; it may seems to bring economic prosperity to the people, but in the same time sentenced a death penalty on the Taiwanese traditional industries, such as the towel industry. Therefore, it seems for the ordinary citizens that an ideal administration should always consider equality as the ultimate goal.

     Furthermore, it also reveals the ill-favored truth that without a firm economy as basic foundation there would be no social fairness. It is simple to understand this concept by thinking that if a country does not have a well-functioned economic system, how could it provide job opportunities for the needed and how could it watch over the underprivileged minority. Here, the cruel reality had exposed itself by emphasizing that fortune is the exact solution for it. For instance, when the great economic recession stroke the world back in the past years; many people were driven out of their job and were depended on the country’s pension. What if then the country were poor and were not capable of distributing out pensions for the needed. If that happened to be the case, the whole idea of the social fairness will not be considered that much. 
     To make a short conclusion, we can assume that there is no true social fairness existed in the world. It is impossible to have everyone to stand on the equal bases. Sacrifices have to be made in order to assure the welfares of the majority. Hence, the whole theory of equality and social fairness are to be designated to be idealism. Although many people claimed that why should certain people suffer while the rest benefit; it is without doubt a serious and sad problem to be discussed but the economic theory of “Opportunity Cost” might provide some explanation to support this concept. The New Oxford American Dictionary defines the economic theory “Opportunity Cost” as "the loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen". Briefly, what it means is that if we had to make a choice between the choices, we should always choose the one that provides the less cost.

Group Final Project 3.3

Thousands of French people launched a demonstration on May 26, 2013 to protest against same gender marriage. They marched on street to show their opposition for the “marriage for all” law that passed on May 18. Among the protestors are religious leaders and local conservative people. They claims that “gay couples should have equal rights, but within an institution other than marriage”. What is more, many are also against same gender married couples to adopt children.

Living in this booming century, where all the traditional aspects are challenged by various new thoughts, it is not avoidable to take in new ideas. With the rapid growth of technology and the thought of equality between different people, we begin to think and question what we had done in the past, whether it is right or wrong. With this tide taking part, comes our motivation for the group’s final project. In the past when we talked about people going out with same gender, we tend to use negative words such as gay or lesbian. However, people in this century begin to change their thought about gays and lesbian. They point out that it is acceptable to be with the people that truly loved you than someone that does not liked you. We should respect their relationship because they are just as the same as our relationships. In our final group project, we made a survey online to gather and analyze people’s idea about same gender marriage. 

Our statistics includes 132 data. According to our survey heterosexual are still the dominant now (84-13). However, what is interesting is that among these heterosexual 74.34% people agreed on same gender marriage. Moreover, there are approximately 85.84% people supported same gender marriage to be legal, which is different to what happened in France. However, when it comes to whether or not you will go on a demonstration to support same gender marriage not many people voted will. Only 51.33% people said that they will step out to participate. This leads to a very interesting conclusion, perhaps many people just verbally agree same gender marriage to be legal but they do not really care how it will be accepted for they are not enthusiastic enough. The result on whether letting same gender marriage legal will decrease the fear of gays and lesbians showed an interesting result too, 57.52% said yes and 42.48% said no this is a very close number which leads us to think that maybe the best way to let it legal is to change people’s wrong idea about gays and lesbians. 

Many of our thinking come from our family, which means traditional aspect has a large impact on us. According to our survey the number one reason why people are against gays is because of traditional thoughts followed by family perspective, social tendency and the fear of gays.

Final Group Project (3.1)

In our final group project, we are planning to make a short video film about the situation we are facing and interviewing professionals at this area. Then we will combine all the sources we have and put them into a short presentation.     

Challenges For Taiwanese University Students of this Generation (2.4)

Confucian Chinese believe that only through education can people succeed. Therefore, most Asian parents want their children to get the best education they can afford.

As a result our Nobel laureate Lee Yuan-Tze, made President Lee Teng-Hui adopt his education reform, which includes increasing the number of colleges and universities.

The consequences, however, dropped the value of university diploma. Now graduating from university no longer means assurance for jobs. 

When questioned about what is his future plan as a university freshman . “Knowing what I will do in the future when I graduate” said Johnny, a freshman in the English department at NCU. He points out that even though almost every student can enter university nowadays, but only few of these students knows what they are going to do when graduate. “Because my major is English; I will enhance my English ability and develop my critical thinking. Moreover, I will cultivate my social skill by participating in various activities.”

Chad, a freshman in the English department at NCU comes up with the same conclusion as Johnny. Chad suggested that if   anyone plans to get a job after graduation; they would have to start preparing in advance and find their interest as fast as possible.”

There is no denial that a university diploma in Taiwan is losing its promise for jobs. It is the trend and obstacles for every university student of this generation. Every University students should begin thinking and knowing what they are going to do in the future. After all, the main goal of attending a university is to acquire higher education and get a promising profession.
